This art project consists of a number of street performances held in Belarusian towns which were later exhibited in the Internet. Each episode has a media occasion and a message, and all of them are connected by the artistic form used: drawings on paper put up in a town in specific locations, photographed the same way and posted online. The micro-world shown in the photos represents a virtual reality of a modern town.

The project reflects on the state of the society and has the aim to switch the moods: turn fear and greed into inspiration, hopelessness into finding the way out. «Freedom on Paper» has received thousands of positive reviews as well as formal awards and inspired followers both in Belarus and abroad.

The first episode appeared as a reflection on a historical date for Belarus – an unofficial national day of independence – Freedom Day, which was impossible to celebrate cheerfully this year given the circumstance of the spring 2011. The project was born amidst the fear and depression of the long and difficult winter and the inevitable feeling of hopelessness which prevailed at that time. For the active part of the society the morning of March 25th did not start as a holiday. People were sitting in front of the computers, not expecting anything good while browsing through arrest reports and news about searches at NGO offices and activists’ flats. It seemed to be impossible that the national white-red-white colors will be seen in the city that day, which has become a tradition for the street actions which normally take place on March 25th.

The project was done during the day when many were afraid to go out. In the afternoon we posted the photo report online. As a result it appeared among the top stories at the biggest information resources. The project expressed the emotional state of the Belarusian society in terms that were clear even to the foreign public who are not well familiar with the situation in Belarus. The visual tools that were used became a means of communication across the boarders.

The artistic method was not a random choice. The watercolors on paper emphasize the sublimity and fragility of the tiny characters. The series is vividly simple and low-budget and covers various parts of the city. A girl with an umbrella, cheerful youngsters at the central square, an old lady with a bag of tasty stuff, white-red-white hot-air balloon and other celebratory images describe a national holiday in a typical European city.

This art project has received thousands of positive reviews and a record high (for the Belarusian Internet) number of recommendations on Facebook. The photos from the project became Photos of the Day on the biggest Belarusian and Russian photo web-pages.

The “paper project” was continued in April to support the musicians who found themselves in the middle of an absurd situation – being unable to perform on stage or TV/radio in their own country. Using some ideological reasoning the anonymous “list of the banned artists” included 57 musicians, play-writers, novelists from Belarus as well as from Europe and the USA. In a couple of days the concerts of famous Belarusian alternative bands (“Liapis Trubetskoj”, N.R.M., Neuro Dubel etc) were cancelled one by one. As opposed to the sad news about the cancelled concerts the Internet spread the news “Banned Musicians Performed at the Biggest Stages of the City”. This time the paper characters – 8 popular musicians – were placed next to the biggest concert halls of Miensk.

An unexpected, but very pleasant, outcome of the project was the appearance of the followers in Belarus and abroad. They print the images and take their own photos of the tiny paper characters in the streets of different European cities. As a result of the strong demand the photos from both episodes were uploaded online in the quality suitable for print for free use by the followers.

The photos of “Freedom on Paper” took part in the touring exposition “Human rights and civil society in Belarus” in autumn 2011 in the cities of European countries.

The project received the Grand Prix award in the nomination “Best Communication Project” as well as the 1st prize in the nomination “Socially significant projects in art and culture” at the 2nd festival of Belarusian advertising and communication Ad.nak.
